PLEASE STOP using learning styles in the classroom!

For years, I have taught my education students that learning styles are not substantiated by research and that instead of tailoring lessons around how students prefer to receive information, we should instead teach them strategies and tools that support how the brain processes information.  Instead of focusing on delivering content in a preferred style for different students, we should focus on creating context and helping students to make connections between what they are learning and what they already know.   We also need to acknowledge that there is a distinct difference between memorizing and learning.  If you work in education, the following books about learning are must reads:

How Humans Learn: The Science and Stories behind Effective College Teaching by Joshua Eyler

Teach Students How to Learn by Saundra Mcguire

Make it Stick by Peter Brown, Henry Roediger, and Mark McDaniel

The authors of Make it Stick also have a great companion website with valuable resources for educators.

For K12 educators, Jennifer Gonzales has an amazing blog dedicated to all things related to pedagogy.  This post about teacher strategies has great information about teaching and learning.

Not convinced to invest the time to read either of these books?  Check out this video that does a great job of debunking learning style theory.

If you work in education or learning and development, I implore you to become an expert in learning theory and understanding how the brain processes information so that you can better serve your learners.
